She packs the Wagoneer right after breakfast.

Strong jaw. Sharp nose. Deep-set eyes, steady and green, her hair pulled back and twisted in a casual knot.

She threads through narrow, twisting streets out of Boston, speeds up south of Quincy. Just before reaching the ferry she stops at a roadside stand to buy sweet Macoun apples; he’s already on the island, waiting, with pinot noir and Parrano cheese.

Two nights of sleeping alone is enough.
