Étretat had already been painted by Delacroix and Courbet, but that didn’t stop Monet. He thought he could do it better—the sand of the Normandy shore, the light glinting off the cliffs at Cap d’Antifer.

At least that’s what we’ve read.

What if his motivation was really his muse, Alice Hoschedé, with her light-colored eyes and her penchant for silk?

What if she was sauntering along the shore that day?

What if she wore a flowing silk blouse (asymmetrical neckline) and a drapey, creamy silk skirt?

He was a man, after all.

“It’s terribly audacious of me to do that after Courbet did it so well,” Monet had said of painting Étretat, “but I’ll try to do it differently.”
