In a 1961 Ferrari through the narrow streets of Turin, the way he drives, can be harrowing. In lengthening nautical stripes and an Italian jersey knit that hugs and flatters in all the right places—dazzling.

Unexpected (to him) were your interests in aerodynamics, civil rights, and football (the European kind). Or the flippant remarks on style—the skinny end of the tie worn longer and how dashing a wrist-watch would look on the outside of a tailored cuff. He tried not to react.

Later, you received a call from an assistant. “He would like you to watch his interview on ABC tomorrow.” And there it is. The skinny end of the tie. The watch on the cuff.

Soon, he’s calling at 3 a.m. about labor unions and automobile design. Later to be discussed on his mahogany yawl with the port wine sails.
