Above one ear, a lush white Iris florentina tucked into her hair. I happen to know she plucked it yesterday from an olive grove near Radda, and before she drove away, our mutual friend Piero loaded buckets of the flowers into the back seat of her ‘73 Corniche.

Now they perfume every room of her flat.

Later over perfectly-mixed Palomas, Piero tells me he’s in love, as if that isn’t the most obvious thing in the world.
