Prep fashion is an American invention. The Brits have their Sloane Rangers and the French their bon chic bon genre but the roots of this movement lie in the alumni of preparatory institutions of the Northeast United States.
To be sure, it comes with it a certain perception. Social and economic status. A cadence of speech perhaps. There exist lists of dos and don’ts that involve everything from what breed of dog is most desirable, to when it’s okay to wear white (not before Memorial Day and not after Labor Day). It’s Ivy League in the 50’s. Polo. Tennis. Crew. But it is most importantly, a look.
Today, preppy denotes a style of clothing that supersedes the social prerequisites. A preference for certain colors, prints, and cuts that evoke feelings and memories for all people. Memories of summer. Cookouts. Poolside get-togethers. Maybe even ditching a class or two. It’s young and it’s posh. And the only exclusions we’re making are snooty attitudes.
