Fall on Nantucket.

The summer crowds have disappeared. The sea air is cool enough to have a bit of a bite to it. 

Lunch at the Rose and Crown (try the Thai green curry mussels).

Then, just a short walk away, my favorite spot on the island, the Whaling Museum.

Whale bone carvings. Ship models. Whole whale skeletons. Amazing displays of scrimshaw (the sperm whale teeth are my personal favorite).

A strange, and oddly beautiful 1849 vintage Fresnel lens from the Sankaty Head lighthouse. Harpoons and lances of every description. Entire whaling boats.

I can almost feel the spray over the bow.

Luckily for me, I dressed appropriately.
