Early 1900s. Cars are open-topped and motoring is considered an outdoor sport. Not so bad in milder weather, but in the winter, you really have to want to go somewhere.

The gearing-up, on its own, can put you off. Goggles. Hat. Leather gauntlets. A scarf. A lap robe. Most essentially, a warm coat.

A duster is fine in warm months, but for cold, you need something substantial. Out of England comes the Teddy Bear Coat, in deep-pile alpaca fur fabric.

These days, we’ve got seat warmers and heated steering wheels. You can start your car before you ever leave the house. But where’s the excitement, the adventure, in that? The getting-noticed of it all?
